Series: Miracles of the OT
Conquering the Giant of Fear

INTRO: What is fear?

    * What is fear?  Anticipation of pain or misfortune.  In other words something that hasn’t yet happened.  Fear is something that starts in your stomach and literally spreads to your legs and arms and it causes us to do two things freeze or panic. What are we afraid of?  There are lots of things we are afraid of…  Here are some of your responses:

    * Dying a terrible death
    * Hell and the Devil
    * Loosing someone we love / Family member **
    * Children’s future (Spouse related)
    * Fear of unhappiness in marriage.
    * Kids with all the bad influence in front of them
    * That my loved ones won’t be saved.
    * Being single at 32
    * My father.
    * To be poor.  (A few people wrote this one.)
    * In-existence not liking the idea of not existing…
    * Fear of heights ……. Fear of the dark
    * Fear of being alone… especially at night.
    * Fear of Bugs ……. Fear of snakes
    * Fear of Ghosts
    * Fear of driving… 90% of drivers think they are better than other drivers.

    * The size of Goliath.  Vs. 4-7, over 9 feet, or 2.73 meters tall bigger than Yao Ming, His armor alone weighed 60 kilos.
    * Being hurt, Being killed, failing, being mocked if he changed his mind and ran.
    * David had a real reason to be afraid.

His Perspective

    * Somehow he didn’t see what everyone else saw.
    * It is easy for our perspective about a situation to gain control over us.
    * We often don’t look at the opportunity.
    * Vs. 37 The Lord who rescued me from the claws of the lion and the bear will rescue me from this Philistine!"   Saul finally consented. "All right, go ahead," he said. "And may the Lord be with you!"

His Methods vs. 38

    * He was given Saul’s armor the Kings armor.  There was no better armor in all the land.  Everything I read about that time period was that having a shield and some armor was often a life saver.
    * David had a sling and a staff.
    * God will call you to unconventional methods to in order to give you the victory.

His Motives

    * To glorify the name of the Most High God of Israel.
    * His cause was pure.  17:41 - 47 Don’t expect God to help you if you are involved in doing evil and want God’s help to get out of it.

His Experience

    * He started with small things.  Like lions and bears.
          o Think of your fear right now what is it?
          o Think of a way you can overcome it?
    * He had confidence in the Lord.

His Attitude

    * Nothing is too difficult for God!
    * He acted without a promise just on what he believed in!
