GO Question

Questions on Sermon “The Prodigal Son (PS)”

Read the parable of the PS as a starter (Luke 15 : 11-24)

1) The PS was presumptuous (doing something that you hardly have the right to do, in a way that seems rude) and self-willed.
The good thing is that the PS knew his rights as a son.
-    What are our birth rights as children of God? Do we know them? Do we operate on them??
The bad thing is that the PS didn’t wait for God’s timing and disrespected his father by demanding his “rights”. Amazingly, the father allows him to do so and gives the PS what he asks for, even though it was against his (the father’s) will plan.
-    Find another story in the bible where this also happens, that God allows somebody to do something that goes against His will. Has this ever happened to you?

2) PS left his father’s house (and got in trouble eventually).
-    Read Amos 8 : 11-14
-    Think about it: Is there a famine for God’s word in Surabaya?

3) PS came to his senses.
-    Read 1 Timothy 6:6
-    Discuss: Are we content with what we have or are we slaves of consumerism? (Always wanting more while never being satisfied?)

4) PS returned home to his family and to his father’s purposes.
-    What score would you give your GO Group for making PSs feel accepted and welcome? Score on a scale from 1 till 10 with 1 being a closed clan of old friends and 10 being super accepting, supportive and warm.
-    Let’s make it a point to invite the PSs back to the father. How to do this?
-    Let’s also make it a priority to make them feel welcome back home in the family of God. How to do this?
I assume that the PS was smelly and physically and mentally in a bad condition (he must have picked up some bad habits in the years of partying with prostitutes and his later struggle to survive.) Yet his father hugs, kisses and accepts him. Totally.
-    How flexible are we in accepting PSs that are different than the average church attendee?

5) PS was restored.
He got a robe which showed his status as son of the father, he got a ring that gave him authority (to sign and make decisions for himself) and he got shoes to carry out his mission. First and for all he was showered with hugs and kisses from his father that affirmed the love and care of the father for him.
-    Which of all these would you like for yourself the most?
-    Find verses in the bible that affirm that God actually wants to give these things to his children ( or has given them already ).
-    Pray for these things for your group members individually.
